Reflectance is a ratio of the radiation energy which is being reflected from the surface to the radiation energy that incidents on the surface. The reflectance from a particular substance will depend on its surface finish. The surface and the color of that substrate actually controls the value of that particular reflectance. Based on external reflectance, the market is segregated into diffuse and specular types. In diffused mode of sensing, which is called as proximity mode, transmitter and the receiver are within the same housing. Light from a transmitter used to strike the target, which is used to reflect light at an arbitrary angles. Some of those reflected light used to return to the receiver when the target is being detected. Because much of the transmitted energy is being lost because of the target angle and the ability to reflect the light, diffused mode reflects into short sensing ranges which is  attainable with retro-reflective and thru-beam mode. Specular reflection which is  also known as the  regular reflection is a kind of  mirror reflection of different waves, like light, from the surface. In this method, each incident of ray is being reflected, with  reflected ray which is having the same angle to the surface.
